Methodology

How we rate businesses

Consumers Voice Africa is built to be an independent authority — not just a place where reviews pile up. Like a restaurant guide, we keep the crowd's voice and our own judgement separate, and we show both. What follows is exactly how each works, and what we will and won't do.

Two independent signals

ConsumersVoice shows two independent signals. They are never mixed: a business can be popular with customers yet hold no ConsumersVoice star, and vice-versa.

1 · Consumer reviews (the crowd)

Honest experiences — good or bad — rated 1 to 5 stars by people who identify themselves (name + verified email). No paid reviews, no invented ratings. New listings show "No verified reviews yet" until real customers add them.

2 · ConsumersVoice assessment (the inspector)

  • — Not yet assessed. The default. ConsumersVoice has not independently assessed the business. This is where every business stands today.
  • ★ Verified & Credible. Passed independent verification: real, operating, verifiable contact, a legitimate track record, and no red flags.
  • ★★ Excellence in Delivery. Verified & Credible plus demonstrated delivery excellence — verified project quality, real consumer reviews (at least 5, averaging 4.0+), responsiveness, and consistency.

A CV star appears only after a real, documented assessment. No star is shown without one — the ladder is deliberately empty at launch.

How consumer reviews are weighted

When verified reviews exist, we present them using established, defensible factors — the same principles serious review platforms use. These are our method; they never invent data.

  • Verification first. Reviews come only from people who identify themselves (name + a verified email). Identity is what makes a review accountable — and it is our headline trust feature.
  • Recency. Recent reviews carry more weight, and every review shows its date. A business is judged on how it performs now.
  • Consistency. A steady record over time counts for more than a single spike — one glowing (or damning) review does not move the needle on its own.
  • Response. Whether a business engages with its reviews — acknowledging issues, resolving them — is itself a trust signal we surface.

Today almost every listing shows "No verified reviews yet — be the first to review." That is the honest state of a new directory. We would rather show an empty score than a fake one.

Our independent assessment — the two-star ladder

Separate from the crowd, ConsumersVoice conducts its own structured assessment. It is deliberately restrained — a maximum of two stars, not five. Scarcity is the point: few earn two. A star is displayed only after a real, documented assessment against the criteria above. No business is starred today; the ladder launches empty and fills only as genuine assessments are completed.

The Top 3 Ghana Award — our most rigorous assessment

Once a year, in the industries where we have enough verified data, ConsumersVoice runs its most thorough evaluation of all: the Top 3 Ghana Award. It scores eligible businesses against nine weighted pillars, triangulated from four independent research streams:

  1. Consumer Voice Survey (40%) — structured surveys of verified customers who can evidence a genuine transaction.
  2. Mystery Shopping (20%) — blind engagements by different field researchers across days, times, and channels.
  3. Public Digital Reputation (20%) — de-duplicated, bot-filtered public reviews, weighted by recency and verification.
  4. Sector Expert Panel (20%) — independent experts, paid a flat honorarium, blinded to the other streams, bound by a conflict-of-interest declaration.

9-Pillar Weighted Overall Score

The nine pillars

Every eligible organisation is scored against nine weighted dimensions, each out of 10. No pillar may fall below 7.0, and the Weighted Overall Score must reach 8.0 for a Top 3 place — if fewer than three businesses clear the bar, fewer than three awards are issued.

  1. Quality of Service 15%

The intrinsic quality of what is delivered — the product or service outcome, technical accuracy, consistency.

  2. Professionalism 12%

Conduct of staff, presentation, punctuality, and respect shown to customers and suppliers.

  3. Service Expertise 12%

Depth of knowledge, accuracy of advice, problem-solving ability, specialist competency.

  4. Quality of Delivery 12%

How the service or product reaches the consumer — timeliness, condition on arrival, reliability of promised dates.

  5. Customer Feedback 15%

Independently verified customer sentiment — reviews, survey responses, repeat-customer and recommendation rates.

  6. Customer Service 10%

Responsiveness, courtesy, issue resolution, post-sale support, complaint handling.

  7. Health & Safety 8%

Workplace and customer-facing safety practices and compliance with relevant standards.

  8. Communication 8%

Clarity and accuracy of claims, transparency of pricing, responsiveness to enquiries.

  9. Project Management 8%

Organisational discipline, timeline adherence, scope and financial discipline, delivery of what was promised.

The Top 3 Ghana Award runs on an annual cycle. It is administered by ConsumersVoice and published at top3ghana.com. The inaugural cycle is in its research window now — no winners have been announced yet. See the award we administer for the honest state of the cycle.

Our honesty rules

  • No fabricated reviews, scores, star ratings, awards, or vote counts — ever.
  • A ConsumersVoice star or a Top 3 award appears only when a real, documented assessment has been done.
  • A listing is not an endorsement. "Live site confirmed" means only that — a real, reachable business.
  • The bar is neutral and applies identically to every company, including the Walada Group's own brands.
